Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood containing critical clotting factors. Plasma can be used to treat patients with certain bleeding disorders, and for plasma exchanges. Plasma is usually taken from whole blood donations. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days. A plasma-only donation is rare at the Red Cross, but can it can be donated every 4 weeks.

We are America's lifeblood. Blood means life. From critically ill newborns to trauma victims, their lives are changed by generous volunteers who give the American Red Cross more than 6 million units of blood each year. The Red Cross can quickly provide lifesaving blood wherever it's needed, across the country. The River Valley Region is one of 35 blood regions across the United States that make up Biomedical Services.
