Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood containing critical clotting factors. Plasma can be used to treat patients with certain bleeding disorders, and for plasma exchanges. Plasma is usually taken from whole blood donations. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days. A plasma-only donation is rare at the Red Cross, but can it can be donated every 4 weeks.

One Simple Selfless Act

A 6-year-old princess has cancer. Leukemia strikes a mother of four out of the blue. A teenage fiddle player has a tumor. All of these stories are true. They're real people from Kentucky, Indiana, and Southeastern Illinois. All of them have happy endings because of one simple selfless act: An average person takes time out of his busy schedule to give a part of himself so that someone he doesn't know may live. He's a blood donor. Next time it may be an auto accident, a liver transplant, or more chemotherapy. Whatever it is, whoever it is, she'll make sure they're ready because she's already rolled up her sleeve to help. She's a blood donor.

Why should YOU give blood? We'll give you three good reasons.

  1. Because you never know when you might need it. Almost 15 in 20 people in the U.S. will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lifetime.
  2. Because not enough people are giving blood. Only 1 in 20 people nationwide actually donate blood (about 5.5%). And it's even lower here in the River Valley Region (about 4.5%).
  3. You'll feel good about it when you do it. Whether you consider it a civic duty or a higher calling, you will get a profound sense of accomplishment.
