Every single unit of blood goes through as many as 12 tests to ensure patient safety. Testing is just one of multiple layers of safety we use to protect the blood supply. These layers include self-deferral, completion of the blood donation record, health history screening, confidential unit exclusion, and post-donation information. All needles, bags, and tubes are used one time only.

Whole Blood and Apheresis Platelets

Whole Blood
We're in the process of moving towards a more appointment-based scheduling system for whole blood donors. Currently, you can make appointments at any donor center in the region online. Plus, we're adding scheduled appointments at more and more mobile blood drives every day. Soon, you'll be able to make appointments online for most mobile blood drives.

To make a whole blood appointment online, you'll be asked to create a profile.
We'll ask for some basic information the first time you visit. After that, you'll simply log on and make your appointment quickly and easily. Please note: Online whole blood appointments are available right now at our donor centers and selected blood drives. Click here to get started. Of course, walk-ins are still accepted at blood drives open to the public. Click here to search for a blood drive near you.

Apheresis Platelets
Appointments are required to donate platelets. To make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or e-mail RVRApheresis@usa.redcross.org.
